Do your research on each species. Find out times of the year the creatures are on the move and where they breed. Find a friend you can go on trips with because so much of the Big Year experience for me in 2009 was the communal moments…and you’ll need those all important witnesses to your sightings!

Some species, like the Snowy Plover, can be found at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year, so your chances of success are good. Others, like the Mission Blue Butterfly, will only occur during one short season and if you miss it, you won’t be adding that species to your Big Year list.

Be sure to read all the information about each species and the corresponding action item in the “See Species, Take Action!” section of the WildEquity Big Year web site!

Remember that Action Items cannot be doubled up. For example, volunteering to work with the Park Stewards at Mori Point counts as either working with the Park Stewards or volunteering at Mori Point not both. The same would be true for volunteering at Edgewood Park and in San Mateo County. That’s two separate Action Items. They cannot be combined.
